SUMMARY:NIGHT NATURE HIKE AT ROCKPORT PARK
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the west end of the parking lot next to the swimming pool in Rockport Park in Janesville. Join us for a night hike in Janesville’s largest park for a warm summer evening in June. This is the peak time of the year to see bats\, fireflies and glowworms\, smell the night-blooming wildflowers and hear the calls of owls\, frogs\, and toads. This is an excellent program for families with children or for scout groups\, church groups\, etc. If rain threatens\, call the Janesville parks cancellation hotline at 608-373-4380 for weather related cancellations and/or rescheduling. For all of our night hikes\, participants should wear light colored clothing appropriate for the forecasted temperatures and have some form of insect repellent handy\, but no flashlights\, please. Some trails may be damp\, so wear shoes or boots that are OK to get slightly wet and/or muddy. If there is rain on Friday night\, we will try again at the same meeting place and time for Saturday night. Tjhis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 19: 9-11pm: (Saturday\, June 20\, rain date) Night Nature Hike at the Fair Meadows State Natural Area near Lake Koshkonong\, 11305 N. Vogel Rd.. Milton.\nFor this hike\, we tour the privately owned Fair Meadows State Natural Area that we have visited several times before. Fair Meadows is a 300 acre site with wide\, easily hiked trails that wind through native and restored prairies\, oak woodlands\, ponds and wetlands adjacent to Lake Koshkonong. In a celebration of early summer\, we will hike the paths to listen\, see and smell the natural world on what should be a warm summer’s eve. This is the peak time of the year to smell night blooming wildflowers\, see bats\, glowworms and fireflies\, and hear the calls of owls in the woods and the frogs\, toads and night birds of the ponds and marshes. The spectacular display of fireflies at this site alone is worth the hike\, and we may also get to hear the calls of coyotes nearby. This event is free and open to the public.
