By the year 2060, one-quarter of our population in the United States will be over the age of 65 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines healthy aging as the “process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age.” That doesn’t seem to encompass the bigger picture.
People are living longer, working longer, living healthier lives, contributing to society and local communities through wisdom, experience, productivity, and perspective. That does not mean that the life course is without tribulation or trial or that the absence of disease and the ability to function results in healthy aging.
