In recognition of Parkinson’s Awareness Month in April\, this free program is being offered to help raise awareness and provide education for our community. \nThis educational session will be led by Emily Kieck\, MS\, CCC-SLP\, Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist at Edgerton Hospital\, and will introduce LSVT LOUD®\, an evidence-based\, intensive voice therapy program designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s disease. \nFrom 11:00am – 11:45am in Conference Room Monarch at Edgerton Hospital – Edgerton Clinic\, attendees will learn how Parkinson’s can impact speech\, including reduced volume\, monotone voice\, and difficulty being understood. The session will explain how LSVT LOUD works to strengthen vocal volume\, improve speech clarity\, and build confidence in everyday communication. Research shows that early intervention can help individuals maintain communication abilities and support overall quality of life. \nParticipants will also learn who may benefit from therapy and will have the opportunity to ask questions during an open discussion. \n“Effective communication is essential for maintaining quality of life\,” said Kieck. “LSVT has been shown to significantly improve vocal strength and clarity in people with Parkinson’s\, and we are excited to share this information with our community.” \nThis free event is open to individuals living with Parkinson’s disease\, caregivers\, family members\, and anyone interested in learning more about speech therapy resources available in our community\, but registration is required.

DESCRIPTION:3 p.m. concert at the Monroe Arts Center by the Bel Canto Singers\, directed by Allen Redford and accompanied by Christina Parkinson. The Monroe High School Chamber Choir\, directed by Alex Lentz\, will also be featured. \nThe Bel Canto Singers have a long tradition with the Monroe Arts Center\, first performing in the lovely concert hall in 1979. Since then\, Bel Canto has grown from a small group of Monroe friends singing madrigals to an accomplished choir from a large stateline area. At the same time\, the Monroe Arts Center has grown from a fledgling arts venue to a flourishing center of music\, art\, theater and arts education in an expanded\, accessible facility. \nAdmission is $10 at the door. Ages 10 and under enter for free. There are no advance ticket sales.

The program features songs by legendary folksinger and songwriter Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie (1912-1967)\, as well as commentary on the time period and each song. This commentary frames the program in a larger historical context\, and offers specific details on Guthrie’s songs and his biography. The program also includes two singalong songs. \nThe presenter\, Bucky Halker\, holds a PhD in American history. He is a songwriter\, performer\, and historian with 15 albums\, including Anywhere But Utah: Songs of Joe Hill (2015)\, a musical tribute to martyred labor songwriter Joe Hill (1879-1915)\, and The Ghost of Woody Guthrie (2012)\, an original music tribute to the legendary folksinger.
