Milton Common Council members and the mayor will talk about their compensation from the city Tuesday night.
Annually, the mayor of Milton earns $2,200 a year, and council members earn $1,200. Combined, the mayor and six council members earn $9,400 a year. A city memo says those rates haven’t been adjusted in 20 years.
In a survey of 15 municipalities with comparable populations, Milton paid its mayor and council members the least of all of them.
State law would prohibit the council and the mayor from increasing their own compensation during their present terms. The earliest any raises could take effect would be April 2027, and those would apply to just three council seats and the mayor because that’s when those terms expire. The rest of the council seats would be eligible for raises in 2028.
Alternatively, the council could choose to enact raises for everyone starting in 2028 — or opt to keep their compensation at current levels.
