Wisconsin agriculture officials take action in response to confirmed bird flu cases in Jefferson County.

To prevent potential spread of the highly contagious and fatal disease, the Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection is suspending poultry shows, exhibitions, swap meets and movement of birds in four counties: Jefferson, Rock, Walworth and Waukesha.

The suspension will be in place through Dec. 31.

Birds from a domestic flock in Jefferson County tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza in late September.

DATCP says bird owners should continue practicing strict biosecurity to protect their flocks.

Signs of bird flu, which state officials say does not pose a threat to humans, can include a decrease in egg production or soft, misshapen eggs; runny nose, coughing, sneezing or difficulty breathing; diarrhea; discoloration of wattles, combs and legs; stumbling or falling down; and sudden death.
