It’s being done quietly, but the Janesville City Council is now talking with city staff over the pending sale of the 250-acre, city-owned former General Motors site.
Janesville City Hall announces on a public agenda posted for Monday’s city council meeting that council will enter a closed session to discuss “in particular the GM-JATCO site’s sale.”
It’s the first time that city staff and the council have cloistered behind closed doors to discuss sale of the GM-JATCO site since the city entered into a 120-day due diligence period with Virdian Partners.
Viridian wants to buy the GM site to build a massive, hyperscale data center on the site.
City manager Kevin Lahner has said it could take the city up to two years to work through a full proposal to build an 800 megawatt data center at the GM site, but Viridian’s 120-day due diligence to buy the GM property closes in early March – a little less than a month from now.
The council would have to approve sale of the property and any development plan on the property.
The city of Jaensville’s announcement on the city council agenda does not include any pending action dealing with the GM site or its sale, either before or after the closed session on Monday.
